Research
Four connected themes, from a single gene to a new variety in a farmer’s field.

01
Heat-tolerant rice
Genes from traditional varieties that keep rice flowering in a heatwave.
A few hours above 35 °C at flowering can halve a rice harvest. We map the genes that protect pollen in heat-tolerant landraces.
- Genetic mapping in large populations
- Gene editing to test candidates
- Field trials in hot seasons

02
Drought and roots
How root architecture helps millet find water deep in the soil.
We image roots in the field and in transparent soil, and link deep, steep roots to the genes that build them.

03
Pangenomes of wild relatives
Reading the genomes of 300 wild plants for useful genes.
Wild relatives carry genes that were lost during domestication. Our pangenome lets breeders find and use them.

04
Breeding with farmers
Field trials with farming communities, so new varieties are tested where they will be grown.
Farmers choose the lines they like best in their own fields, and their choices guide our breeding.
