Research

Four connected themes, from growing a single nanocrystal to the microscopes that let us watch it happen.

01

Shape-controlled nanocrystals

Gold, copper and perovskite nanocrystals grown to precise shapes for light harvesting.

The shape of a nanocrystal decides which facets it shows, and so how it absorbs light and binds molecules. We grow cubes, rods and stars with nanometre precision.

  • Seed-mediated growth
  • Ligand engineering
  • Single-particle spectroscopy
02

Two-dimensional materials

Atom-thin oxides and chalcogenides that move ions and electrons in new ways.

We exfoliate and grow crystals only a few atoms thick, and measure how ions hop across them, for sensors, memory chips and brain-like computing.

03

Watching nanocrystals grow

Liquid-cell electron microscopy that films nucleation and growth as it happens.

Our liquid cells hold a drop of solution inside the microscope, so we can watch particles nucleate, grow and assemble, one atomic layer at a time.

04

Nanocatalysis

Single-atom and nanoparticle catalysts that turn carbon dioxide into fuels.

We design catalysts with every atom exposed, and use microscopy and spectroscopy to see which sites do the chemistry.
