Research

Four connected questions about how the brain stores, replays and loses memories.

01Memory replay during sleepHow the hippocampus replays the day’s experiences to make lasting memories.

During sleep, neurons that fired together during the day fire again, in order and much faster. We record this replay and interrupt it to see what it does.

  • Sleep recordings in freely moving mice
  • Closed-loop interruption of replay
  • Memory tests the next day
02Large-scale recordingImaging tens of thousands of neurons at once with calcium indicators and silicon probes.

Our head-mounted microscopes and high-density probes record whole populations of neurons while animals explore, learn and sleep.

03Circuits of forgettingWhy some memories fade, and how the brain decides which to keep.

Forgetting is not just decay. We study the dopamine signals that actively weaken some memories and protect others.

04Neural networks and the brainComputational models that link single neurons to behaviour.

We build network models that learn and replay like the hippocampus, and test their predictions in our recordings.
